(27 Dec 2016) A bomb placed on a motorcycle exploded near a police station in Istanbul on October 6th 2016, wounding at least five people, a senior official said. The explosion, which happened near the police station in Yenibosna district was caused by a bomb mounted on a motorcycle. One of the injured is said to be in a serious condition. *** Two explosions hit outside a major soccer stadium in Istanbul on the evening of December 10th, and Turkish authorities say about 20 police officers have been wounded. Police cordoned off the area as smoke rose from the newly built Besiktas Stadium. Witnesses said gunfire could be heard in what appeared to have been an armed attack on police. The private NTV channel said the target of the attack was a bus for riot police. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. This year Istanbul has witnessed bombings attributed by authorities to the Islamic State group or claimed by Kurdish militants. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu gave the casualty toll and said the wounded were police officers. The explosions took place after the home team Besiktas beat visitor Bursaspor 2-1 in the Turkish Super League. *** Turkish counter-terrorism police have continued to detain members of a pro-Kurdish political party in the wake of deadly suicide bombings in Istanbul, according to Turkish media. The State-run Anadolu Agency reported that two lawmakers of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) had been taken into custody in Ankara, the capital. The report said they were detained within the scope of two separate terror-related investigations in the southeastern cities of Batman and Diyarbakir. Widespread detentions of HDP officials by the Turkish security forces have taken place following the December 10th bombings near an Istanbul soccer stadium that killed at least 44 people and wounded 149. Turkish authorities arrested more than 200 people on December 12th. The Turkey-based Kurdish militant group TAK claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities blamed the carnage on the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. International Crisis Group analyst Berkay Mandiraci, said the attack had more to do with happenings in Syria than domestic issues. *** 29 former Turkish police officers went on trial accused of aiding the failed military coup in July 2016 - the first trial in Istanbul following the attempted coup that led to some 270 deaths. Renegade officers in Turkey's military used tanks, fighter jets and helicopters in their July 15th attempt to unseat the government, attacking the parliament and other key buildings. Turkey blamed it on a network of followers of the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. The police officers standing trial on December 27th are accused of aiding the coup by not carrying out their duties. Prosecutors have demanded aggravated life prison terms for 21 officers charged with "attempted coup" while eight others face a maximum 15 years in prison for membership in a terrorist organisation. 01:00:05 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
