Since 1965, Wolf Biermann was not only banned from performing and publishing in the GDR, but also from traveling - both to the East and to the West. In 1976, Wolf Biermann was surprisingly allowed to leave the country for a tour in West Germany. In Cologne, on November 13, 1976, after a twelve-year ban on performing, he gives his first concert in front of eight thousand people. At the time, no one realised that the departure had only been approved in order to expatriate Biermann. Three days after the concert, all the agencies and radio stations reported that "Biermann's right of residence in the GDR had been revoked".
