Welcome back to the Modern DT&I! Today we’re waking up early and staying trackside in Ironton for the entire day. It’s a typical day at Ironton, with a morning manifest departing before dawn. It’s lead by SD40-2 446, a Kato model, and 444, a Broadway Limited model. Both have Tsunami 2 sound and Scale Sound Systems speakers. The overnight Oak Hill turn returns next. It runs as needed to customers in Oak Hill, primarily a rock and sand quarry. GP38 204 and GP35 379 are in charge. 204 (Atlas) has Loksound 4 and a Scale Sound Systems speaker, while 379 (Athearn RTR) has Tsunami 2 and a stock Athearn speaker. You can really hear the difference! At Dawn, GP35 388, originally and Ann Arbor unit, leads GP15 321 with the Ironton - Jackson turn. This is a 5-day per week run, forwarding cars for points north to Jackson yard, as well as working the car shops there. 388 is a Broadway Limited model with stock Paragon 4 sound, while 321 is from Athearn Genesis with Tsunami 2 and Scale Sound Systems speaker. We’ll see them return later in the day. It was several hours before the next train, an eastbound grain train. This train will be handed off to NS here in Ironton to take east to the ports for export. SD50 505 and SD38s 251 and 250 are doing the honors. 505 is a Proto2000 model, while the SD38 pair is from Athearn. All three have Scale Sound Systems speakers. 505 and 251 have Tsunami 2, while 250 has TCS WOWsound. Next we see a northbound coal train. This train takes the DT&I all the way to Detroit, then the GTW down to the Monroe, Michigan power plant. Today it has 3 SD60s: DTI 605 & 603, and NS 6564. These moves are becoming rare since the DTI acquired the former B&O Cowen line in West Virginia. Most coal comes from there now rather than NS. All 3 SD60s are Proto/Walthers with Tsunami 2 and Scale Sound Systems speakers. Later in the afternoon, the action heats up with 2 of the hottest moves on this part of the system. First, an Ironton to Crestline Triple Crown train glides up Railroad Street. This is a relatively new move, with service between Norfolk and Detroit via NS. GP40-2s 424 & 422 power the train. Both are stock DCC/Sound Athearn Genesis models. Not long after the Triple Crown leaves town, the priority auto manifest from Flat Rock arrives. This is a 6, sometimes 7-day weekly train, making it one of the more reliable catches on this part of the system. It exclusively carries autos for east coast destinations, and parts for eastern and southeastern assembly plants. Its counterpart forwards autos from these plants. We’ll see it later. Today’s train has Ohio Central-painted SD40T-2 475 and GP38-2s 223 and 225 for power. All 3 are from Athearn and have Tsunami 2 and Scale Sound Systems speakers, except 225 which has a stock Athearn speaker. Later in the evening, we catch the counterpart auto freight move lead by GTW 8952 and GP40-2s 406 and 407…all Athearn Genesis models with Tsunami 2. 8952 and 406 have Scale Sound Systems speakers, while 407 is stock DCC/Sound. Finally, 321 and 388 return with the Jackson turn. You’ll notice 3 hot bottle or sub cars built for molten steel. These were recently rebuilt at the Jackson car shops and are on their way back to Ashland, KY. The DTI serves the mill there via trackage rights from Ironton to Kenova on NS, then onto Chessie for the run over to the mill. These rights were granted specifically for the steel slab movements out of Detroit. Give us some love! Hit the like button, subscribe to the channel, and hit the notification bell!
