This video was produced by the City of Austin’s Planning Department in February 2024 to aid people who wish to use the US Census website to retrieve data from the Census website https://data.census.gov. The video reviews how to: • Select preferred geographies. • Sort through census tables. • Search through data.census.gov • Download data. • Assess data you’ve downloaded from the site. The Census Bureau produces Data Gems, their own series of instructional videos that teach about different Census Bureau tools, surveys, and sites. https://www.census.gov/data/academy/d... As discussed in the video, the Census Bureau produces several items to aid people as they work with census data. Much of this is metadata that helps people understand the census table. These products include: • Table Shells: Excel sheets that allow people to sort by Table ID and see the different categories included within tables. They are available on the same page as the Table List. https://www.census.gov/programs-surve... • Table List: A sortable list that includes each table, the specific variables each table considers, the universe included for each table, the interval (1 or 5 year) for which the variable is produced, and the geography for which each table is produced. This product is available on the same page as the Table Shells. https://www.census.gov/programs-surve... Both of these products are available for each year, or vintage, of census data. The following are steps for obtaining census tract data for all census tracts fully or partially within the city of Austin: 1. Within the geography filter, select “Census Tract.” 2. Choose “Texas” within the “Select State” window. 3. Above the search bar, in bold is a plus icon next to “Within other geographies”. 4. Click the plus icon to open up the additional geographies list and select “Place.” 5. From the list below, select “Austin city, Texas.” 6. The first check box “All tracts fully/partially within Austin city, Texas.”
