Fiji's shark dives are a great example of how ecotourism can benefit the society (economy) and animals at the same time. While work is created and local communities receive a fee for every diver, the myths on sharks are replaced by fascination and knowledge. Surely, this cannot work everywhere and has to be adapted to regional and local customs, laws, geographics etc., the Shark Reef Marine Reserve in Fiji should act as a role model for sustainable shark tourism. Being declared the first National Marine Protected Area in 2014, it continues to attract tens of thousands of people to the Pacific to dive and learn about sharks while keeping the sharks protected and generating money.
