Unreported World is from Colombia, where rival anti-government narco-militias have returned the country to a state of conflict and the fight for cocaine production has forced thousands from their homes. Subscribe to our channel for more Unreported World episodes / unreportedworld . Despite a 2016 peace deal with FARC, a Marxist group that fought the government for over 50 years, the region is once again engulfed in violence, as guerrilla groups battle for control of coca fields and lucrative smuggling routes. Reporter Guillermo Galdos ventures into the jungle to meet members of the ELN, the country’s largest remaining insurgent group, branded a terrorist organisation by the US. At the heart of efforts to protect the region’s youth from being drawn into the conflict is Carmen García, known as the “Mother of Catatumbo.” Widowed by Colombia’s earlier civil war and targeted for assassination, she now leads women fighting to protect their children from being recruited or killed. At the heart of this conflict is the abundance of coca, the crucial raw ingredient for cocaine. With more than 40,000 hectares under cultivation, Galdos meets the farmers who say it’s often the only way to survive.
