It primarily affects people who have weakened immune systems, such as those with uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, or those who have received immunosuppressive therapy. Causes: The fungi that cause mucormycosis are found in soil, plants, and decaying organic matter. It can enter the body through the lungs, skin, or even through ingestion. It is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. Risk factors: Weakened immune system, Diabetes, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Organ transplant recipients, Long-term use of steroids, Trauma or injury to the skin, Prolonged use of a ventilator, Excessive use of antibiotics. Symptoms: The symptoms of mucormycosis depend on the location of the infection. The most common type of infection is rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis, which affects the sinuses, eyes, and brain. Symptoms may include: Facial swelling, Headache, Black lesions on the nasal bridge or inside the mouth, Loss of vision, Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath, Chest pain. Diagnosis: Mucormycosis is diagnosed through a combination of imaging tests, such as CT scans or MRI, and laboratory tests to identify the type of fungi causing the infection. A biopsy may also be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of complications. Treatment: Treatment of mucormycosis involves a combination of antifungal medications, surgical debridement (removal of infected tissue), and management of underlying conditions. The antifungal medications used are usually Amphotericin B and Posaconazole. The extent of the surgical procedure depends on the severity and location of the infection. Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is crucial in diabetic patients. Prevention: Prevention of mucormycosis involves managing underlying conditions that weaken the immune system, such as controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics, avoiding long-term use of steroids, and practicing good hygiene to avoid infections. People with weakened immune systems should also avoid areas with high levels of dust and dirt, as these can contain the fungus that causes mucormycosis. ---- This channel is directed towards healthcare professionals, students, & individuals with a genuine interest in medical education.
