Uzbekistan’s capital is full of surprises: an earthquake memorial at the epicenter of disaster, a Soviet TV Tower, peaceful parks, and a haunting repression museum. This is Tashkent like you’ve never seen it. In 1966, while England was celebrating their World Cup victory, Tashkent — the capital of Uzbekistan — was devastated by a massive earthquake that destroyed 80% of the city. In this video, I visit the Monument of Courage, built at the epicenter of the quake, and explore how the Soviet Union rebuilt the city from the rubble. From there, I wander through the peaceful parks that surround central Tashkent, stumble across the Olympic Museum, and discover Navruz Park — a place full of surprises with bridges, ferris wheels, and family picnics. Across the road, I take a look at the Osiyo Grand, one of the city’s lavish wedding halls, before heading to the Tashkent TV Tower — Central Asia’s tallest structure. Finally, I end the day at the Museum of Victims of Political Repression and its striking turquoise-domed memorial. Built on the site where mass graves were discovered during construction of the TV Tower, this place remembers the thousands of Uzbeks who were executed or exiled under Soviet rule. Join me as I uncover the contrasts of Tashkent — tragedy and triumph, repression and resilience, history and modern life. I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
