Welcome to Ways of Seeing, Lesson #2 In this session, Anushray explores the provocative world of Marcel Duchamp, the philosophy of Dadaism, and the concept of readymade art. We reflect on how artists challenge conventions, redefine what constitutes art, and how cultural conditioning influences our perception of visual culture. Through Duchamp’s Fountain, Robert Rauschenberg’s mixed media works, and other avant-garde examples, we ask: Who decides what art is? Is technical skill necessary for art? How can we “unsee” cultural conditioning and appreciate art beyond familiar frameworks? This lecture encourages critical engagement with visual media, art history, and personal interpretation while offering students an activity to experiment with creating their own “readymades.” 00:00 – Introduction to Ways of Seeing 00:30 – Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917) 01:40 – Duchamp’s provocation and Stephen Higgs’ perspective 03:00 – Anti-art and the birth of Dadaism in New York 05:00 – Avant-garde and “unseeing” cultural conditioning 07:00 – Cross-cultural ways of seeing (Indian & Canadian lens) 08:10 – Duchamp’s abstract works and “readymade” philosophy 09:30 – Duchamp as an early “meme artist” (Mona Lisa parody) 10:30 – Class discussion questions on what defines art 11:50 – Technical skills vs. creative authenticity 12:00 – Class activity: capturing your own “readymade” 13:30 – Rules for identifying readymades 14:30 – Examples: shoes, pencils, and context-shifted objects 15:30 – Other avant-garde artists: Man Ray, Mondrian, Rauschenberg 17:10 – Mixed media and the legacy of anti-art in MoMA 17:50 – Summary and suggested student research 18:30 – Closing remarks & preview of next lecture #duchamp #modernart #artclass #education #contemporaryart #arthistory #university
