When emotions have hindered our work, daily functions, and relationships, accepting our emotions can become challenging. Let’s try to understand how emotions take place from the evolutionary psychology perspective. Imagine you are on a hike. Suddenly, you run into a snake or a bear. What would be our response then? What changes would our body experience? We get nervous. Our heart rate breathing will accelerate. Our body gets stiff so that we are able to run, escape from danger anytime. If we can’t escape from danger, we won’t stand there quietly and allow the bear to attack us. Our instinct is to fight back. This is the fight or flight response when we encounter threats so that we can fight or run away from threats or danger. If I don’t ever fear a snake or a bear, I would likely be hurt. As a result, we have emotions, and emotions are to protect us not to get hurt physically and mentally so that we could have a better chance to survive. Humans are social animals. Since ancient times, living in a group has a much greater survival rate than living alone. This applies to our psychological aspect as well. We rely on others since we were born. Living with others makes us feel much safer with the world. Take the earlier example of running into a bear, compared with those who run into the bear with a group of people, those who run into the bear by themselves are more likely to experience stronger emotions. From the evolutionary psychology perspective, our emotions and behaviors are to increase our survival rate. (Need to delete the examples in the videos due to limited words count) There are reasons why our emotions have not been eliminated in the process of evolution. Our feelings are to protect us from any physical or psychological harm, increasing our survival rate in society. So, thank you, my emotions. Thank you for sending reminders of my current state from time to time. Next time, when we struggle to accept our present emotions, pause for a second. The emotion shows up for a reason, not simply showing up to upset us. Slow to be upset with your feelings. Spend a minute or two to ponder what my feelings try to express? What are my emotions trying to tell me? What can I learn from my emotions? Try to remember my emotions are to protect me to better survive in this society. So, thank you, emotions. Thank you for your protection. I will try to accept you. We can all try to think from evolutionary psychology perspectives and learn to accept our feelings. Let’s give it a try! 【關於我】 大家好,我是Nicky,我碩士畢業於美國認證(accredited by Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education, COAMFT)的婚姻家族治療系所(Marriage and Family Therapy),面對面諮商服務的對象有個人、伴侶和家庭,累積諮商經驗有超過1000小時,希望能把我所學的用淺顯易懂的方式分享給大家。 【About Me】 I am Nicky.
