CONTENT: Australia / Cape York Peninsula / Far North Queensland Somerset Bay / Five Beaches READ TRAVEL JOURNAL BELOW TRAVEL JOURNAL: 11-13.09.2020 After conquering the Northernmost point of the Australian Continent, part 9 of our trip to Cape York leads us to the eastern side of the Tip – Somerset and the Five Beaches Drive. To celebrate reaching our goal by having a proper shower, getting our wash done by washing machines, dig into Aussie bar food, our team of 5 vehicles had booked a group spot at Punsand Bay Campground. In the morning of 11th September, we said our “goodbyes” to our fellow-travellers and headed off to Somerset – a pioneering European settlement at the Coral Sea. SOMERSET By mid-19th Century it was decided that new colony needed a station at Far-North of the continent. A bay inhabited by Gudang people and facing to Albany island at Coral sea, was chosen as it’s administrative centre. Jardine family drove cattle from Rockhampton to newly scouted lands and established their homestead at Somerset. Nowadays Somerset official population reaches to 0, offers bush-camping by the windy beach and the windy bay is home to remnants from Indigenous, Pioneering European settlements and pearlers. From Somerset beach campground, a 15-minute walk along the shore to the north leads through mangroves, hops over sharp volcanic rocks (recommended during low tide) to a beach-cave covered by indigenous cave-paintings and inhabited by tiny bats. A short walk south from the camp leads the explorer to the remnants of a well, where after spotting a windmill hidden in the bushes, it is possible to follow the rusty irrigation pipe uphill to the ruins of the abandoned Somerset Hill Homestead. After our first windy night at Somerset, 4 cars from our Cape York crew, pulled into our newly established “home” and we decided to take on to the Five Beaches Drive. FIVE BEACHES DRIVE Five Beaches Drive is a 4x4 beach-driving loop heading down from the Somerset Hill. Volcanic cliffs with the views to turquoise Coral Sea gave way to white sandy beaches. Soft sandy ascends and descends leading to different little bays added an amount of fun to the drive. It was low-tide and Shane the Oyster man headed off for the oyster hunt. We were guided to look for smaller-sized rocks with oysters on. For opening a screwdriver and a hammer was used and from “sea to mouth” pop-up snack-bar was open and un-opened leftovers were packed as a “take-away” order into a big white bucket filled with salt-water. The drive back to Somerset Beach Camp passes two lakes fringed by white sands and filled with brownish swamp-water. Lake Wicheura offers an adventurous off-road circuit – soft sandy parts give way to narrow bushy-parts, leading to occasional harder floodplains. FOR NEXT Tip of Cape York is not done yet. Before heading down south, there was one more thing on our bucket list: taking a fishing charter at Seisia.
