On March 30, Hu Dehua—the son of Hu Yaobang—passed away in Beijing at the age of 77. During his life, Hu Dehua briefly served as the deputy president of Yanhuang Chunqiu, a liberal-leaning political journal. Du Daozheng, the magazine’s founding editor, had hoped that Hu, as Hu Yaobang’s son, might offer Yanhuang Chunqiu a measure of political protection. Unfortunately, just two months later, the publication suffered a devastating crackdown. Since China's Reform and Opening era, the Chinese Communist Party has seen an internal divide between left-leaning and right-leaning factions. The most prominent media platform for the Party’s so-called “rightists” was none other than Yanhuang Chunqiu. In this episode, we explore how the CCP’s internal left and right emerged, what influential articles Yanhuang Chunqiu published, and how we should understand the role and fate of the Party's internal rightist voice today. 1.
