(4 Mar 2020) Street performer Angel Alvarado saw long lines of people waiting to buy overpriced facemasks and cleaning products at stores in Ecuador's second largest city, days after the outbreak of a global virus. So he broke into song - and it's proved to be really popular on social media, he says. "I did not think it would be so viral, I took it as a joke, but in social media people started to added me, to call me, asking for my number, television channels, radio, people congratulating me because I gave them a little bit of joy," Alvarado said on Tuesday, as he delighted passers by in Guayaquil with his song. Rising concern following the new coronavirus' arrival to Latin America has inspired songwriters across the region. They're capturing anxiety on faces around them in music, sometimes with a comical bent. Videos of some coronavirus songs being captured on cell phones or professionally recorded are going viral. One music video warns people against getting sick as band members toast with bottles of Corona beer. "Be careful, it could hit you," they sing. "If you dismiss it, it could kill." Brazil, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Mexico are among Latin American countries which have already reported cases of the new virus.
