In my talk on Parsha Yitro, I approach the text from an atheist and Jewish perspective—treating the Torah not as divine instruction but as a layered human document shaped by power, memory, and social needs. I read Yitro as a rare moment where authority comes from outside the Israelite hierarchy and where listening, not revelation, produces ethical change, raising questions about whose voices are trusted and whose are excluded—especially women’s voices, which remain structurally absent even as community formation depends on them. The Sinai revelation functions less as a historical event and more as a myth of legitimacy, transforming a loose group into a people through law, fear, and spectacle. Rather than rejecting the tradition, I engage it seriously: honoring Torah as an inherited cultural text while interrogating how it constructs leadership, obedience, and moral authority, and asking what it means for Jews today to read this story critically without surrendering it to either literalism or dismissal.
