I hiked with a couple of fine hiking friends who had never been down, or up, the feature known as Maude’s Crack here in Big South Fork. We would do both near the beginning and end of our hike. In between we hiked to the river, downstream to Big Island, up No Business Creek and completed a loop by going up Craft Branch. While I’ve never located where I believe the old homesite along the stream is at, there’s plenty of evidence of human activity. There is an old grown up road and dozens of neatly stacked rocks, some as tall as 5 feet. That old road led us back to Maude’s Crack and the 1.1 mile back to Terry Cemetery Trailhead. It was bordering on darkness when we returned to our vehicles and headed back home. It was a fine day indeed!
