Stories of the Heart 2014: Katherine Ray

Katherine Ray was born with a special heart. Her condition is a double inlet left ventricle with transposition of the great vessels meaning she only had one functioning ventricle and the two main arteries in her heart were reversed. This changes the way that the blood circulates in the body and it also causes a shortage of oxygen in the blood. Usually, this requires surgery right after birth, as well as, a series of additional surgeries. Katherine did well at birth and was able to wait for her first surgery. She had her first surgery around 9 months of age and her second one around 2 years of age. Katherine first came to Carilion Clinic Pediatric Cardiology when she was 3 weeks old. She immediately came under the care of William Gay, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist. Dr. Gay and his team have helped to manage Katherine’s condition and coordinate with the surgeons performing her operations. Now at age 6, Katherine is doing great. Her heart condition has not slowed her down and she is expected to continue to grow thrive.
