Todai-ji Temple Morning Walk | Great Buddha of Nara & Nigatsudo Hall | Japan 4K

This video shows a peaceful morning walk through Todai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan, one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the country and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. The walk begins early in the morning around 7:00 AM, when the temple grounds are still quiet. Starting from the Todai-ji intersection, we pass through the impressive Nandaimon Gate, where the powerful guardian statues known as the Nio (Agyo and Ungyo) protect the entrance. These statues were created by the famous sculptors Unkei and Kaikei during the Kamakura period. From there we walk to Nigatsudo Hall, which is known for the traditional Buddhist ceremony called Omizutori. This ceremony has been held every year for more than 1,250 years. During the event, large flaming torches are carried along the balcony of Nigatsudo at night. In this video you can also see the preparation of the torches used for the ceremony. At 8:00 AM, when Todai-ji Daibutsuden opens, we enter the Great Buddha Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Inside sits the famous Great Buddha of Nara (Vairocana Buddha). Besides the Great Buddha, the hall also contains several important statues including large bodhisattva statues and guardian deities such as Komokuten and Tamonten, who protect the Buddha. Another famous feature inside the hall is the pillar with a hole at its base. The hole is said to be the same size as the Great Buddha’s nostril. According to tradition, passing through it brings good luck and good health. The walk ends by returning through the temple grounds and passing the famous Nara Park deer, which are considered sacred messengers of the gods in the local Shinto tradition.
