Erasing the GCR London Extension into Nottingham | Abandoned Railway History In this video, we explore the fascinating remains of the Great Central Railway (GCR) London Extension as it threads its way through the northern suburbs of Nottingham. Part of a larger series on the GCR, this episode focuses on what’s left of this once-thriving railway line, which extended from London to the Manchester. We take you on a journey through abandoned railway stations, including sites at Bulwell Common and New Basford, as well as uncovering traces of the GCR’s legacy in the area. We'll start the video on the outskirts of Hucknall, looking for remains of Bulwell Hall Halt station, before seeing some of the small remains of the mighty Bullwel Viaduct that stretched across the valley. Nothing is left of Bulwell Common station apart from the overbridge walls. New Basford station is even less. We’ll explore the route of the former GCR line, now mostly lost to time, while highlighting the few remaining signs of its past. Notably, we investigate the bricked-up portal of the Sherwood Rise Tunnel and it's impressive cutting, a key feature of the GCR’s ambitious engineering. For those with a keen interest in railway history, transport geography, and industrial heritage, this video offers a unique insight into the GCR’s forgotten northern stretch.
