When your partner opens with a bid in a fifth‑card major, it’s preferable to seek a 4‑4 trump fit rather than a 5‑3 fit — even though both add up to eight trumps in total. Before raising, it’s important to check whether the opener also has 4 cards in the other major suit. That way, you can play in a 4‑4 major fit, maximizing your chances of success.
