Cigar specs, rating and review Drew Estate Blackened M81 Smoked August 2023 Acquired from: local cigar shop Vitola: Marketed as "Double Corona" but at size 7 inches x 50 gauge fits in the Churchill category Approximate price US$ = $10.50 single stick Review Notes: The Drew Estate Blackened M81 has an interesting marketing story - it is the creation of three unlikely collaborators - Jonathan Drew of Drew Estate, James Hetfield of the heavy metal band Metallica, and Rob Dietrich, Master Distiller. Lifelong cigar smokers and fans of Maduro tobacco, the three came up with a Maduro bomb, the promise is that is "Maduro to the core" with all three components made of Maduro. As the video explains, this cigar started out rough - I had a difficult time producing any smoke at the beginning, and there was tunneling and canoeing. Fortunately, these all fell away at around 1-1/2" and the cigar self-corrected nicely. Draw and burn (after the rough start) were both good, no hint of cracking or unraveling. Taste was okay, certainly rich and somewhat complex, with a bit of black pepper spice to make things interesting. The cigar is not a powerhouse but right around medium-full. All in all, this is a good cigar, certainly worthy of a try - especially if you enjoy Maduro. Ratings: Boldness 8/10 – but not super-strong Overall Experience 8.75/10 – A very good cigar, certainly to buy at least one.
