The Titanic's kennels were on C Deck. First class only. The dogs had stewards, exercise schedules, and meat from the same kitchens that fed the Astors. Below, in steerage, 76 children shared space with cargo. When the iceberg struck at 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, the lifeboats launched half-empty. First-class women hesitated. First-class dogs did not. Lady, a Pomeranian, wrapped in blankets by her owner Margaret Hays. Sun Yat-sen, a Pekingese, tucked into the coat of Henry Sleeper Harper. They survived. Of the 109 children in third class, 52 survived. The rest had no kennels to shelter them. No stewards to carry them. Only the bulkheads, and the water, and the class system the Victorians built—sailing one last time into the dark. This is The Long Shadow. Stories from the century after Victoria, where her values met modern disaster. THE SURVIVORS • Lady (Pomeranian) — rescued by Margaret Hays, lifeboat 7 • Sun Yat-sen (Pekingese) — rescued by Henry Sleeper Harper, lifeboat 3 • Unknown (possibly Rigel, Newfoundland) — disputed account, reportedly swam for hours THE LOST • Frou-Frou (toy dog) — stayed with owner, refused to leave without her • Gamin de Pycombe (French bulldog) — owned by Robert Daniel, first class • Multiple champion show dogs — kennels flooded before evacuation SOURCES • "RMS Titanic: A Model of Errors" by Captain L.M.
