Hi everyone! So these past two weeks I was able to work with PAs during surgery. I've always told premed that as a PA, it was in your scope of practice to do surgeries. Up until these past two weeks, I did not understand the extend of surgeries PAs assisted in. I did a little talk about this on my snap chat but if you missed it: PAs get to assist surgeons (first assist) during surgery but they will never get to do surgeries on their own. At least not to my knowledge. During the surgeries that I was in, the PAs assisted by retracting the tissues/ligaments, suction the smoke and extra blood, and at the end they sutured the skin together. The moral of the story is - if you are going into medicine to do surgery. I do not think surgery as a PA will fill that void. Unless all you want to do is close the skin after the surgeon has complete the surgery. It is great that PAs only have 2 years of schooling and that they get to jump around in different specialties - but they never have full responsibility for a patient. Nor do they have the final say in the clinical decision making. So Physician vs. PA - that just depends on what you find fulfilling in a career. Hope you enjoyed the video.
