Chumbe Island Coral Park, established from 1991, as the first privately managed marine park in Tanzania, has become an international test case for sustainable marine conservation funded by ecotourism. Located southwest of Zanzibar, Chumbe Island Coral Park runs a small eco-lodge for the conservation of a no-take Marine and Forest Sanctuary. The strictest eco-technologies are used for energy, water and sanitation of the small eco-lodge, and visitors leave knowing that profits are channeled back into comprehensive conservation and education programs which are explained by Head ranger, Omari Nyange, who has already worked for 20 years on the island.
