Released on: 1985-04-30 This is a video of a bass line transcription I did for an exam as a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1998, that I recently found. My original transcription was handwritten on 9 pages because there was almost no place to put a repeat sign. Before this recording, I managed to reduce it to 7 pages of music in the Sibelius program. Daryll Jones is one of the bass guitar greats who had a huge influence on my music development and playing during the '90s. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend MILES DAVIS concert in Belgrade (Serbia) in 1986 when Darryl Jones also performed because I was too young. Back then, I knew almost nothing about jazz music. But that's why there are great albums on which he played, which I listened to countless times during those years. Miles Davis – Decoy (1984), Miles Davis – You're Under Arrest (1985), Sting – Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985), Sting – Bring On the Night (1986) and Steps Ahead – Live in Tokyo (1986). What makes this bass track so special is, first of all, Daryl's great combination throughout the composition of pizzicato and Slap/Pop technique with a lot of character, energy and dynamics. Then there are the variations of phrases he uses, the choice of notes, embellishments and thirdly, of course, his signature tone. There are a couple of places where Darryl plays fast 16th Slap/Pop lines. It is really hard to hear exactly what notes are played and what is precise rhythm, so I recorded something as close as possible in his style.
