In yet another medical miracle, the life of a 17-year old was phenomenally saved by the multi-disciplinary medical experts at International Modern Hospital. On 21st January evening, the teen complained of severe shortness of breath on a call with DCAS and collapsed before DCAS could obtain any further information about his whereabouts. Tracking with GPS, DCAS identified the location and the patient was rushed to the IMH Emergency, unconscious due to respiratory arrest. And ever since the entire medical team at IMH was on their feet to ensure this battle against life and death was won. “As a pulmonologist this was one of the toughest and rarest case I have seen in my career”, asserted Dr. Muhammad Aslam, Specialist Pulmonologist at IMH. Since the patient had a respiratory arrest and went unconscious before reaching the hospital, the body was bluish due to low oxygen level. The Intensivist at IMH, Dr. Nitin intubated him in ER with Anesthesia medication as the airway was very tight to pass the endotracheal tube. After stabilizing from the ER, the boy was shifted to ICU and connected to a mechanical ventilator. Further evaluation showed that the patient’s chest tightness is not relieved with ventilator support and medications. “We tried all the available medications in our hospital and also arranged medicines from outside. A CT SCAN of the chest was performed which showed the blood supply to a few parts of the lung was blocked and we started medication for the same. Still his condition continued to be critical”, said Dr. Aslam. On the fourth day, the patient suffered a sudden worsening of his condition and went to cardiorespiratory arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was given 3 times as per ACLS protocol and the heart started to beat again, but the lungs were still not better. General Surgeon Dr. Siva asserted, “Further evaluation identified that there is an air leak in the right lung and I immediately did a chest tube insertion.” The medical experts at IMH discussed the case with Rashid Hospital and American Hospital and experts from both the hospitals advised to continue the same treatment without much expectation. The case was discussed with other experts from outside and advice was followed. By nothing short of a medical miracle and the incessant efforts of the medical team, the patient gradually responded to treatment and came out from ventilator support. Chest tube was removed, oxygen was stopped and the chest became clear. For this remarkable feat in bringing back the patients alive from the jaws of death, we at IMH sincerely thank Dr. Nitin, Dr. Saad, Dr. Siva and all nurses in ICU and Ward, the resident doctors, ER team, Dietician, Physiotherapy department, Radiology department, Cardiology department, Neurologist, Anesthesia department, Pharmacy and all others who helped in the care of the patient
