This cuts power to the headlights while you are starting the bike (while the button is pushed), but the contacts and wires to the starter button are undersized for the loud and often fail, leaving you with no headlights. Adding a relay means that only a small amount of power is going through the switch. When you push the start button, power to the relay is cut off thereby cutting off the larger amount of power to the lights at the relay instead of the starter button.
