Are you tired of reading about the latest innovative mask offering the greatest protection against smoke, COVID and fake news? (Protip: no mask can protect against fake news.) Instead of measuring the efficiency of the newest design, let's take a step back, and talk about the pm2.5 filter and its15-year track record protecting hundreds of millions of people against the same airborne particulates that make up smoke pollution. Fitted masks with pm2.5 filter have been used for daily protection from smoke and particulate pollution in Asia for a long time. The cloth masks + filter system known colloquially in Asia as “Pollution Masks” are designed to filter 90% of fine aerosols and airborne particulates in the 70nm range. That's just a few percentage points less than an N95 respirator, but with significantly less discomfort. They are so widespread that in 2006, the Chinese government even created a national standard governing aspects like construction, testing & fit! Filters and masks manufactured to this particular specification, known as GB/T 32619, are laboratory tested and certified, but let's face it: it's not a US standard, so we were not going to be convinced unless we could replicate the results ourselves. So we rigged up a testing system, using tubing, two pm 2.5 air pollution sensors, a pump, some duct, a bbq grill, a dummy whom we named Cindy, and a mask with a pm2.5 filter. We drilled a hole in Cindy's head, inserted the tubing to sit in a recessed area between her mouth and nose, strapped on the mask, and pumped a ton of smoke pollution into her box. Sorry, Cindy. The results speak for themselves. 90% average filtration over multiple tests, with control tests showing negligible filtration without a mask. Our conclusion: a form fitting cloth mask with a specially formulated PM2.5 filter can achieve a “best of both worlds” approach, maximizing filtration while minimizing discomfort and heart strain (inhalation resistance is required to be less than 25% that of an N95 mask). The Puraka team that put this together was a mechanical engineer and a regulatory compliance specialist... not that that makes us experts, but hopefully it gives us at least an iota of credibility.
