The Palestinian civilian death toll mounted on Monday as Israeli aircraft struck densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip in a campaign to quell militant rocket fire menacing nearly half of Israel's population. An overnight airstrike on two houses belonging to an extended clan in Gaza City killed two children and two adults, and injured 42 people, said a Gaza heath official. Elsewhere, the centre of the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon was all but deserted on Monday morning as the town braced for another day of rockets being launched from Gaza. Boaz Drori, a 65-year-old taxi driver, complained that the ongoing violence has affected the city's business. "There's no business, not work for the past few days ... after many bombs here the people do not work," he said. Many Israelis have been evacuating their homes in the south to stay with relatives or friends further north. Beer Sheba's nearly 200-thousand residents live just 25 miles (40 kilometres) from Gaza. Four years ago, they were hit with some 40 rockets in a three-week war between Israel and Hamas militants. On Saturday alone they were targeted by nearly as many. Thanks to Israel's "Iron Dome" missile defence system, which knocked down about half of the projectiles, and residents who followed instructions to stay in shelters at home, no one was harmed. In all, 87 Palestinians, including 50 civilians, have been killed in the six-day onslaught and 720 have been wounded. Three Israeli civilians have died from Palestinian rocket fire and dozens have been wounded. The Israeli rocket-defence system has intercepted hundreds of rockets bound for populated areas.
