Helen Brach, heiress to the Brach candy fortune, disappeared in February 1977 after a routine trip to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. A woman of wealth, generosity, and eccentric habits, Helen had grown cautious in her later years, consulting psychics and shrinking her circle of trust. Her houseman, Jack Matlick, claimed she returned home for several days before leaving for Florida, but inconsistencies in his story, along with mysterious purchases like a nine-pound meat grinder and deep cleaning of her house, immediately raised suspicion. Investigators quickly discovered that Helen’s fortune was being targeted. Eleven forged checks, totaling over $15,000, were traced to Matlick, and she had been involved with Richard Baily, a con man and gigolo connected to the Chicago horse racing mob. Baily exploited wealthy women through horse scams, and Helen’s plans to expose him put her at the center of a dangerous criminal operation led by Silas Jayne, a notorious figure in horse mob activity dating back decades. Over the years, multiple accounts emerged suggesting Helen was murdered and her body destroyed, including a 2005 informant confession claiming she was beaten, shot, and incinerated at a steel mill near Gary, Indiana. No arrests were ever made, her body was never found, and the case remains unsolved.
