Written by Chad Leistikow | Des Moines Register Caitlin Clark sprung from her assigned seat with excitement, fittingly in Section CC, Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as Sydney Affolter’s early 3-point attempt circled the rim, popped back out and dropped through for an early 6-1 Iowa lead on fourth-ranked USC. Clark raised her arms in the air and screamed with authentic support. The 23-year-old from West Des Moines is an Iowa all-time great player, but she’s now the program’s most influential Hawkeye women’s basketball fan. Her legacy as a Hawkeye will never be topped, obviously, as we were reminded Sunday by the incredible crowd that poured into Carver-Hawkeye – and the energy that emanated from it – to watch her No. 22 officially be retired into the arena’s rafters. Forever 22. No matter what happened, the game result would be largely inconsequential compared to the gravity of what was happening Sunday: A moment that marked the passage of time, from tangibly saying goodbye to the Clark era and wondering what’s in store for the Iowa women in years to come. But if Sunday’s game against JuJu Watkins and USC is any indication, the excitement isn’t going away from this program anytime soon. The Hawkeyes delivered a spirited start to the game to take an early 19-point lead, weathered a tough second quarter with a resilient third and gave themselves a fighting chance in the fourth. And in the fourth, they went out and did what Clark’s Hawkeyes did so many times in her No. 22 jersey: They went out and took it. Lucy Olsen scored 15 of her 28 points in the decisive final quarter as the Hawkeyes dazzled the 14,998 breathless fans in attendance and defeated the Trojans, 76-69. For two hours, Clark's number retirement took a back seat to the thrilling action on the court. “Every time I looked around, I was like, ‘Wow this is crazy. I can’t believe I’m here right now,” Olsen said. “I’m glad we got the win in front of all those people.” Before the game, Clark spoke about some of the struggles that she had seen with the Hawkeyes in their 2-6 Big Ten start and five-game losing streak. “The freshman class to me is what’s really exciting,” Clark said. “You can tell they’re freshmen, they’re going to be inexperienced at times but you learn through that and you grow through that. Really proud of this coaching staff. I don’t think people always at times give them the grace they deserve.” Read More: https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/spo...
