Various of flowers left on roadside STORYLINE: Nara residents reacted in disbelief to Friday's news former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a divisive arch-conservative and one of his nation's most powerful and influential figures, died after being shot during a campaign speech. Abe, 67, was shot from behind minutes after he started his speech in the western Japanese city. He was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later pronounced dead despite emergency treatment that included massive blood transfusions, hospital officials said. "It was surprising. It doesn't feel real," Sayo Funauchi, a 17-year-old high school student said following the shooting. Takuya Hashimoto, a 59-year-old local resident, said the location of the speech was dangerous and pointed blame at the Liberal Democratic Party, of which Abe was a member. "Especially because it was in the middle of an intersection. People can surround you, so there was no escape for Mr. Abe," Hashimoto said. "I didn't think Mr. Abe was that bad of a person. So I thought 'did you have to go so far as to kill him?'" Mau Kusumoto, an 18-year-old high school student said. Police arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of an attack that shocked many in Japan, which is one of the world’s safest nations and has some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Cabinet ministers hastily returned to Tokyo from campaign events around the country after the shooting, which he called “dastardly and barbaric." He pledged to carry out Sunday's parliamentary elections as planned. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving leader before stepping down in 2020. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
