How does Storm Shadow work? Cruise Missile Scalp EG in Russian - Ukrainian War

The Storm Shadow missile is designed to overcome enemy air defenses and hit critical targets with high accuracy. The cost of one missile is 1.4 million dollars The missile is based on aircraft, usually Tornado GR4 or Rafale, today it is used in Ukraine and in the Russo-Ukrainian war to launch it using a Soviet Su-24 aircraft. The missile is launched from a high altitude and at a safe distance from enemy air defenses. After launch, the missile uses a turbojet engine to fly to a target at a distance of up to 560 km. For navigation the missile uses combination of GPS and inertial guidance system. The GPS system provides accurate position data, while the inertial system measures the missile's acceleration and rotation to determine its position and orientation. The latter upgrade enables the missile to also receive updates just before impact from its launch vehicle, which can correct the missile's trajectory to avoid obstacles or hit moving targets. The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared SOS that allows it to detect and identify the target. The SOS is sensitive to the heat emitted by the target, which allows it to track moving targets and identify targets in difficult weather conditions. The missile is equipped with several control surfaces, including stabilizers and flaps, which allow it to maneuver in flight. The control surfaces are controlled by the missile's guidance system, which adjusts them as needed to keep the missile on course. Warhead: The missile's warhead is usually a high-explosive fragmentation element designed to penetrate hardened targets and cause a devastating explosion on impact. One of the key features of the missile is its low signature. The missile has a small radar cross section, which means that it is difficult for enemy radar systems to detect and track it. This makes it less vulnerable to enemy air defenses and increases its chances of reaching its target undetected. Another important feature of the missile is its ability to fly at low altitudes. Flying at low altitudes, the missile can avoid detection by enemy radar systems and fly under the cover of radar-guided air defenses. This makes it a very effective weapon to attack well-defended targets. When the missile reaches its target it uses an infrared SOS to locate and identify the target even in adverse weather conditions. The SSS is equipped with advanced image processing algorithms that allow it to distinguish between targets and their surroundings, reducing the risk of collateral damage. Overall, the Storm Shadow missile is an advanced engineering marvel that uses a combination of advanced guidance, navigation and control systems to deliver a highly accurate and lethal payload to the target.
