Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a common genetic disorder, affecting about 1 in 3,000 persons—more than than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined. Interestingly, about half of cases aren’t inherited and arise spontaneously. NF can cause tumors throughout the nervous system, affecting the brain, skin and any nerve in the body. About half of patients have learning disabilities or attention problems, and some have problems with bone structure and scoliosis. Boston Children’s therefore follows children until adulthood.
