Tips from a 30-year detailing pro on how to touch-up rock chips on your car. How to prep the chip area first, then what kind of touch-up paint do you have; the felt tipped marker style or the traditional bottle you get from the dealership or auto parts store? How to use the felt tipped marker style paint touch up pen to fix rock chips or scratches on your hood, plus. How to use the traditional bottle of touch-up paint to properly fix rock chips on your hood. How to sand out the rust in your rock chip before painting. (This is what I buy for my shop: https://amzn.to/4nHUpw0 ) How to remove wax from a rock chip in your hood prior to painting. (here's what I used in the video: https://amzn.to/3JLUfG9 ) Here is a summary of the steps: 1. Wash your car to get things clean. 2. Remove any rust from the rock chip by using a sanding pen, or naval jelly. 3. Clean the chip of any leftover residue by using lacquer thinner on a towel and rubbing very lightly (you don't want to damage the surrounding paint) 4. Make sure the chip is dry from any chemicals you've used in prior steps. 5. Practice dabbing paint on another surface to make sure you've got the hang of how the paint will come off the brush or pen. If your paint is old, it may be thick or even stringy. If this is the case, just add a little lacquer thinner to your bottle and shake it up and try again. Add just a small amount because if you add too much then you've ruined the entire bottle. Start with just a couple drops. 6. Using whatever paint style you have, slowly and carefully dab and brush very small amounts of paint into the chip, being careful to not blob the paint on or smear excess paint up onto the surrounding factory paint. Remember, you can always add more paint after this dries. 7. If you make a mistake, simply wipe the paint back off with your lacquer thinner and towel and start over. 8. Once you're done, allow the chip to dry for about 30 minutes and see how it looks. Add more paint where needed. White paint often needs a few layers to fully hide the darker colored primer/metal below. 9. Remember that YOU CANNOT BUILD UP THE PAINT TO MAKE IT PERFECTLY FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE so don't even try, you will make a huge mess and it will look worse. I am a career paint correction and ceramic coating specialist, and I love getting your car as glossy as possible and keeping it that way so you always have pride of ownership in your car. ***More about how I serve you: https://www.freshstartdetail.com/cera...
