Evaluating animal welfare is a challenging task due to the inherent complexities in understanding the subjective experiences of nonverbal creatures. To effectively enhance the lives of animals, it is crucial to grasp the impact of various living conditions and risk factors on their well-being. Comparing aversive experiences of different natures, such as acute pain from a fracture or prolonged hunger, adds to this complexity. Our innovative analytical framework is designed to describe and quantify pain (defined as any negative perceived state) in animals. It converts evidence about the duration and intensity of pain resulting from each welfare challenge into time spent in four categories of pain intensity. The pain's temporal evolution is outlined for every challenge, and the allocation of pain to each intensity category at each moment is based on our understanding of the pain signal's adaptive significance, underlying pain-generating mechanisms, and the disruptive nature of the pain experience. Utilizing time as a universal metric allows for comparison and integration of the cumulative burden of negative experiences arising from various challenges over a given period, forming the foundation for creating welfare footprints.
