In Gear: Shoei X-Fifteen Helmet Review — Did One of the Best Sport Helmets Just Get Better?

Did one of the best sport helmets just get better? Yep, sure did, mis amigos/amigas. For everyone else, the Shoei X-Fifteen is a significant evolutionary step in the Japanese brand’s top-tier racing helmets, building on the sturdy foundation provided by the Marc Marquez-approved X-Fourteen. The latest iteration brings a host of advancements to the table, mainly focused on enhancing aerodynamics, comfort, and performance for those of the sporting persuasion, whether you’re on the street or track. Let’s dig into the new stuff, which starts with Shoei doubling down on aerodynamic advancements via a revised Advanced Integrated Matrix Plus (AIM+) fiberglass shell design that is said to reduce drag by 6.1 percent and lift by 1.6 percent. The takeaway is that the X-Fifteen is one of the most stable sport helmets on the market we’ve used to date, even when tested aboard liter-class naked machines like the KTM 1390 Super Duke R Evo. The Alpinestars Supertech R10 edges out a narrow win in that category, but not by much. Shoei has changed its ventilation strategy this time, moving to seven adjustable intake vents and six always-open exhaust outlets. The X-Fourteen provided positive airflow, yet the X-Fifteen can flow a bit more and the result is pretty exceptional cooling. Deeper venting channels in the EPS liner and additional perforation in the cheek pads lend a helping hand in this department. Along with better venting, Shoei has introduced the new CWR-F2R shield system and features a new centrally located locking mechanism — it’s a bit different from prior Shoei helmets, but that’s the direction the brand is going with all its newest generation helmets. Plus, we’ve got an extra sniff of upward vision thanks to a redesigned viewport, which offers a clear and unrestricted view when in a tucked position. The X-Fifteen is an excellent choice where comfort is concerned, as the fully adjustable and quite cushy 3D Max-Dry Custom Interior System II is updated once again. While the X-Fourteen was one of the most customizable helmets on the market in terms of fitment, this updated intermediate oval lid expands on that idea with additional customization options and cheek pads that provide more coverage. Achieving an optimal fit is something that many owners will be able to do since we have a bevy of options at our disposal. It also has the rare distinction of carrying DOT, Snell M2020R, and ECE 22.06 certifications simultaneously — note that FIM-certified versions aren’t available in North American markets. Are there any downsides? Well, the X-15 is a little heavier than some of its closest competitors at 3 pounds, 13 ounces and marginally heavier than its predecessor, which weighed 3 pounds, 8 ounces. Shoei’s premium road racing helmet is exactly that: a high-end sport-riding helmet with a premium feel. Frankly, that’s what we’ve come to expect from the Japanese firm, and anything less would be a disappointment. Even my glasses fit in there without causing any pressure points! The bottom line is this: If you’re looking for one of the most stable, comfortable, race-ready helmets on the market, then the Shoei X-Fifteen should be on your shortlist.
