Legendary goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck stopped by the USA Hockey Headquarters this week and took a couple minutes to chat about his early years lacing up the skates, his memories playing with and against the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2011 and his thoughts on the current state of hockey in the U.S. Vanbiesbrouk played professionally for two decades in the NHL and represented the U.S. on nine different occasions. The three-time All-Star was elected into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. And as for "The Beezer's" advice for youth goalies... "It would be to learn how to feel the puck. A lot of times what we see today is a lot of blocking style goaltending. Goalies use their pads now a lot more than their hands. I would like to see young goalies field the puck more and learn catch the puck better. But because the equipment is so light, you don't feel the puck as much. A lot of the feel for the game with making saves is a lost art. My recommendation in how to do that would be to have someone shoot pucks slowly to you and feel them into your body and make sure you cradle them right in. Feel them into your pads and know where you are directing the puck. That's one of the elements I'd suggest for young goalies to start doing."
