In this video I'm answering the question, "How do you set up for an Esophagram with Upper GI (UGI)?" Though this video is technically one asked for in the "Radiology Q&A" series, it also fits in with the Positioning course I teach in the fluoroscopic procedures section. In radiography school, student technologists are often exposed to fluoroscopic examinations well before the subject is covered in their respective curriculum. While you may not yet know the skills for positioning at this time, there's plenty you can do to help prepare for the examination between room setup, contrast and supplies, documenting lot numbers and expiration dates for contrast media, appropriately setting up the control panel and x-ray equipment, and entering patient demographics into the computer. In this video, I'm going to walk you through all the steps that generally (or at least should) take place prior to the patient even entering the room. While it seems like quite an exhaustive list, keep in mind that procedures may vary from location to location, as well as from physician to physician. Still, being prepared ahead of time assures us that the examination will be more efficient, and it will portray a certain level of professionalism if practiced regularly.
