When Finland refused, the Soviet Union invaded on 30 November 1939. Key facts: • Finland was heavily outnumbered in soldiers, tanks, and aircraft • Finnish troops used skis, camouflage, and guerrilla-style tactics in deep snow and forests • The war became famous for Finnish “motti tactics”, where Soviet forces were surrounded and destroyed in smaller pockets • Legendary Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, known as “The White Death,” became one of the most effective snipers in history Human cost: • About 25,000 Finnish soldiers killed • Around 126,000 Soviet soldiers killed (estimated) End of the war: The war ended with the Moscow Peace Treaty in March 1940. Finland remained independent but was forced to cede territory to the Soviet Union, including parts of Karelia.
