MEXICO: WIDOWS MARCH IN PROTEST OF STATE POLICE KILLINGS LAST YEAR

(10 Mar 1996) Spanish/Nat Widows of peasants massacred by state police last year have marched in Gerrero to demand the resignation of Governor Ruben Figueroa, whom they blamed for the killings. Joined by 500 other women to commemorate International Women's Day, the widows marched on Friday to Coyuca de Benitez, where 17 peasants were killed at a police roadblock. Demanding justice and the resignation of Guerrero state governor Ruben Figueroa, the women chanted and marched on the steamy black pavement under the midday sun. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) So that knife users are punished, comrades. That's the aim of our rally, comrades. So that massacres are stopped in our state of Guerrero and to demand Roman Figueroa's resignation. SUPER CAPTION: protester Since 1 January 1995, more than 100 people have been killed in violence in Atoyac de Alvarez county, high in the tropical jungle-covered mountains of Guerrero state. Some resulted from family feuds, land disputes or drug trafficking, but most were the result of attacks by state police forces against political dissidents, especially the Southern Sierra Peasant Organization. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) There is an authoritarian governor; a governor who wanted to silence the opposition through massacres, through violent repression, through violence, and that makes Gerrero State different. Repression and massacres against peasants have been used over and over again. SUPER CAPTION: Saul Lopez Toriano, President of Democratic revolutionary Party (PRD) (opposition) in Guerrero State Peasants are still frightened in Atoyac de Alvarez. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) The government has been coming up and it has threatened comrades in the Sierra. They have disappeared and we are afraid of the government because it could make disappear anyone any minute again. SUPER CAPTION: Eladio Salmeron Moreno, Villager Last June, 17 peasants were killed at a police checkpoint outside nearby Aguas Blancas. Figueroa claimed at the time that police acted in self-defece after they stopped two trucks loaded with peasants to search them for weapons and the peasants opened fire. He distributed a videotape shot by a state government cameraman to prove it. The tape showed dead peasants holding handguns. Critics alleged the tape had been doctored. An original tape broadcast by the private Televisa network showed the dead peasants held no weapons. The government's Human Rights Commission has said the case merits more investigation. Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo sought help from the Supreme Court, which named two justices to review the investigation and rule if there were any irregularities.
