"For me, the music of Moondog is part of the fabric of the city in which I grew up. He was a New York City landmark -- someone who did things his own way. Moondog had his own musical language, inventing his own instruments that were completely unique. He incorporated saxophones, strings, and street noise, writing beautiful melodies that would soar over changing time signatures. He didn't try to be anyone other than himself... absorbing all of this music around him and always expressing from deep in his heart. In my own music, I tend to blur the lines of composition and improvisation, and so I find myself captivated by Moondog’s artful way in which he'd create melodies that sound free, while applying these strict rules of counterpoint to his compositions. Bird's Lament, one of Moondog’s most famous pieces, is a chaconne, written in memory of his friend Charlie Parker. People who don't know it's written music would swear the melodies are improvised, but they aren't." Rob Burger
