REWILDING THE LYNX - MADELEINE MACKAY The enigmatic and stunning Lynx are impressive cats that are related to tigers, lions, domestic cats, jaguars and other members of the large Cat family - There are four species of lynx, including the bobcat. What distinguishes these cats from their relatives are their compact legs, stubby tail and erect ears topped with pointed, black tufts of fur. In one of the most ambitious 'rewilding' projects ever to take place in the UK, the large deer-eating felines could be introduced to three unfenced estates later this year! But now the wild lynx could roam the woods of England and Scotland once again, as part of the most ambitious “rewilding” project ever attempted in the UK. If the Lynx UK Trust’s scheme is approved, the large cats, which prey on deer as well as rabbit and hare, will be released onto three privately owned, unfenced estates in Norfolk, Cumbria and Aberdeenshire. The Eurasian lynx, an original native of the British Isles, is a medium sized Felidae that has been forced out of much of Western Europe by habitat destruction and human persecution over the last 2000 years. The last of the British lynx disappeared around the year 700. In the end the Scottish Government along with the landowners and farmers have to be onboard with a compensation plan for the potential of loss of sheep with this reintroduction. If the farmers are on board then it should work bring much needed balance back to huge areas of the UK’s wildlife.
