Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones) and Amerika (Jose Pablo Cantillo) trick Chappie into stealing cars for them, by saying that people have stolen cars belonging to daddy. In Johannesburg, in a near future, where crime is constantly on the rise, the city's police force has called on the robotics company Tetravaal, headed by Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver from Ghostbusters and Avatar), to provide them with Scout-type police robots. The latter were imagined by Deon Wilson (Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire and Lion), a young and brilliant engineer, who works and develops an artificial intelligence on his own. While taking a robot carcass home, Deon is kidnapped by criminals, who ask him to reprogram the robot to help them commit crimes. Deon integrates his new artificial intelligence into the Scout's program. The robot must then learn everything, like a baby. On the other hand, Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman from X-Men and The Greatest Showman), an ex-military man working at Tetravaal, wants to see the collapse of the Scouts project, so that the police can choose his robot project.
