Mitochondrial disease is a group of disorders caused by dysfunctional mitochondria – mitochondria that don’t work properly. Mitochondrial disease is difficult to diagnose as it can affect different energy intensive systems within the body including the liver, kidneys, brain, digestive tract, heart, eyes, and muscles. Patients can look very different from each other in the symptoms they exhibit, and there are currently over 300 illnesses associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, and the list is growing. Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky explains the steps taken to diagnose mitochondrial disease. Dr. Tarnopolsky is a Professor and Division Head of Neuromuscular and Neurometabolic Disorders, Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University. Dr. Tarnopolsky has focused his practice predominantly in the area of mitochondrial disease, muscle disorders (muscular dystrophy) and other neurometabolic disorders. We have more questions than answers, but you have to start somewhere. We founded MitoCanada to start revealing the mystery behind this disease. One day we will get there.
