Mark Steven Brooks gave me this piece, "In Memoriam Barbara Benary" in the summer of 2019. Recorded in my living room in Palmetto Bay on March 25, 2020. Performed on Clibberace, a 30-key (C3 to F5) Schoenhut toy piano. ABOUT THE PIECE: Barbara Benary, who passed away last year at the age of 73, was a wonderful, eclectic composer and ethnomusicologist, and a friend of mine for 40 years. She was co-founder and director of Gamelan Son of Lion, a NYC based ensemble I performed and recorded with, on and off, for 3 decades. Indonesian music was a major influence on Barbara's own compositions and with a nod to that I composed my piece in what is an approximation of the 5 tone Indonesian scale known as Slendro. The piece opens with a brief free improvisation and there is a brief improvised interlude as well. -MSB
