I usually delete or ignore the hate mail I get - today someone left a comment that I'm "a real scumbag." But I also got a well written email asserting that: "You didn't fail as an artist, you weren't one in the first place." The reason is because, I tried to sell my paintings. I love illustrating and painting; I did charcoal portraits all through high school; I love people and SEEING people. But eventually, yes, I tried to take those skills and those passions and make a living from it. The email concludes: "What I don't understand is why you would want to pretend to be an artist. The world is full of people who make things that look like art, it's quite easy but you don't think like an artist." This is the interesting bit: art (according to many) is not about what you actually produce, it's dependent on your intentions and motivations. It's only ART if you think like an artist, which means prioritizing the work over the reception. And it's still true that, to some extent, the art buying public believes this ideology, so you need to posture your work as eschewing public reception. It can't be for the money. And yet, it is far easier to make and sell work that deliberately satisfies and audience if you know who they are and what they like; and it's entirely possible to make a living with your art if you do this on purpose, instead of producing work and hoping someday someone finds something they like accidentally and "discovers" you. There has never been a time in history where more people have considered themselves artists or writers (nearly everyone) which means there has never been more competition - millions of books are published a year. The chances of getting accidentally discovered are slim. The artists who make it learn the business - luckily, marketing is a creative enterprise, if you allow it to be. Unfortunately, most creative people cling to outdated notions of creative ideology and refuse to adapt to a vastly different marketplace than existed even a few short years ago. Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books. On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.
