Barefoot Grandpa shows and talks about one of our "not so fun" plants - Poison Oak (Toxicodendron pubescens). It's native to the Pacific Coast and grows almost everywhere in California and the Northwestern states where shrubs and trees are present! It thrives from sea level to about 4500 feet - 1400 meters, loves shade, & moisture, but will also grow in open sun on poor soils. It only takes a small amount of the Poison oak oil - urushiol - equal to about a grain of salt, to cause a painful and itchy rash - worse for some very susceptible folks. Even smoke from burning Poison oak can be dangerous. So, avoid it, walk around it, and wash it off after contact, you have about 45 minutes to get it off your skin. A folk cure for prevention and healing is Mugwort - rub the leaves on your skin before exposure, and on the rash to help heal - it works! • Barefoot Grandpa - Mugwort, the Anti-... Calamine lotion and Cortisone cream help also help with the healing. It is out there, and a lot of it - but don't let it keep you from enjoying the wild!! Barefoot Grandpa's (Dan Holmes) videos teach a bit of fun and useful campcraft - from walking softly in the desert, building campfires, equipment reviews, and more! Enjoy, Like, and Subscribe to keep up with the posts! Look out for the inevitable goofs - as these are mostly single takes.
