There are more than 100 million types of organisms in the world. But biologists have identified only 2 million types organisms, in which 0.5 million are plants and 1.5 million are animals. To study such a large collection of organisms, scientists classify them. Classification is a method in which biologists divide organisms into groups and subgroups on the basis of similarities and differences. Classification of organisms is very important for making study easy. That is why organisms are classified into groups and subgroups. Basis of classification: 3 categories are here for classification of organisms. A. Classification on the basis of habitat: Aristotle classified organisms on the basis of habitat like air, water and land. However this classification was not justified as fish and turtle cannot be placed in one group. B. Classification on the basis of physical characteristics: Biologists classified organisms on the basis of physical characteristics like; Prokaryotic cell or eukaryotic cell: Whether an organism is prokaryote or it is eukaryote. Unicellular or multicellular: Whether an organism is unicellular or multicellular. Autotrophic or heterotrophic Photosynthetic or nonphotosynthetic: Whether an organism is having chlorophyll and autotrophic or having no chlorophyll and heterotrophic. C. Modern system of classification: Modern classification of organisms is based on; Habitat Physical characteristics Genetics Physiology Anatomy Evolutionary history Key terms: Classification of organisms Habitat Physical characteristics Prokaryotes and eukaryotes Unicellular and multicellular Autotrophic and heterotrophic Photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic The above points have been discussed and explained by Sabar khan in pashto language with detail. #classificationoforganisms #basisofclassification #sabarkhanlectures
