(8 Mar 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4314785 The brother of a Black man who died at the hands of police last year says he is arming himself in prayer and staying close to his community as jury selection ahead of the trial was placed on pause Monday. Hopeful that justice will prevail, Terrence Floyd told reporters at a news conference at Grace Tabernacle Church in Brooklyn, New York, that he believes his brother's death was not in vain. "I'm praying and hoping for the outcome that we all want. But, you know, in reality, I'm going to say if it don't go that way, I just know and believe in my heart that there's going to be change regardless, for us as a nation," he said. The fate of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee into George Floyd's neck as the Black man said he couldn't breathe, will be decided by 12 residents of Hennepin County who will be picked after extensive grilling about their views. On Monday, the judge overseeing Chauvin's trial called for a pause in the jury selection process while an appeal over the possible reinstatement of a third-degree murder charge is reviewed. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd's death. Legal experts say reinstating the third-degree murder charge would improve the odds of getting a conviction. Judge Peter Cahill said Monday that he does not have jurisdiction to rule on whether the third-degree murder charge should be reinstated against Chauvin while the issue is being appealed. Joined by Civil Rights Leader Rev. Kevin McCall, attorney Sanford Rubenstein and Gwen Carr – whose son Eric Garner died at the hands of police in 2014 – Terrence Floyd said hope in God and the support of his friends would help him get through this difficult time. "It's kind of surreal right now, but we have to basically relive this whole situation all over again," Terrence Floyd said. "But I hope God and my circle that's around me – Rev. McCall, Rubenstein, Mama Carr, David Wright – I'm going to get to this, and I'm going to help my family get through this." Picking a jury is expected to take at least three weeks, as prosecutors and defense attorneys try to weed out potential jurors who may have biases. Legal experts say the key will be finding jurors who can put aside their opinions and decide the case based on the evidence. Floyd was declared dead May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against the handcuffed Black man's neck for about nine minutes, holding his position even after Floyd went limp. Floyd's death sparked sometimes violent protests in Minneapolis and beyond and led to a nationwide reckoning on race. Chauvin and three other officers were fired; the others face an August trial on aiding and abetting charges.
