Talks from the ESI Systems Neuroscience Conference (ESISyNC) 2025: Not your ordinary brain: Altered states of consciousness and their neural basis ► ESISyNC 2025 Playlist: https://studio.youtube.com/playlist/P... ► Last year's ESISyNC Playlist: • ESI SyNC 2024 | ESI Systems Neuroscience C... Can you alter your consciousness using nothing but your breath? According to practitioners of high-intensity breath practices, referred to here as circular breathwork, the answer is a resounding yes. Circular breathwork can trigger profound mental shifts akin to psychedelic experiences - from changed perception to surfacing emotions, ‘Eureka’ moments, and spiritual experiences of universal unity. How can your breathing rhythm affect your conscious state so profoundly? In her talk, Dr. Martha Havenith presents recent findings that begin to unravel the interactions between the physiological dynamics and subjective experiences evoked by breathwork. She shows how falling CO2 levels in our blood may open a door for neuronal dynamics in our brain to shift, and how the experiences that result from that in turn shape our physical and mental well-being. Together, these first glimpses hint at a highly dynamic dance between mind and body during breathwork experiences, highlighting embodied cognition as one of the fundamental features of breathwork ASCs – and of their mental health benefits. / esi_frankfurt / esi_frankfurt / ernst-struengmann-institute https://www.esi-frankfurt.de/
